Wisconsin Election Results

,
Wisconsin Democrats won big Tuesday night, defeating opponents in a recall election.

All six official Democrats have been projected as winners by the Associated Press. When the unofficial results were totaled Tuesday night, recall candidate Shelly Moore easily won Wisconsin’s 10th Senate District primary 3,000 votes ahead of her opponent.

Ms. Moore had just under 54 percent of the 35,790 votes cast and Isaac Weix had just under 45 percent.

The six Democrats who won on Tuesday  Nancy Nusbaum, state Representative Sandy Pasch, Shelly Moore, state Representative Fred Clark, Jessica King and Jennifer Shilling  will now seek to unseat six incumbent Republicans in recall elections on August 9.

The election results come as Wisconsin governor Scott Walker received national attention after pushing for a curtailing of collective bargaining rights in Wisconsin.

“The Republicans pulled out the stops to try and beat the Democrats. They made this a mini-general election, the first real recall test, and they lost,” said former Wisconsin Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager. “This is a big night for the Democrats, and a big night for those of us who believe that these recalls are going to work.”

“The voters of Wisconsin have rejected the Republicans’ dirty tricks, despite their best efforts to turn out voters in these primaries for fake candidates,” said Democratic Party spokeswoman Gillian Morris.

Rick Perry

,
James Richard "Rick" Perry (born March 4, 1950) is the 47th and current Governor of Texas. A Republican, Perry was elected Lieutenant Governor of Texas in 1998 and assumed the governorship in December 2000 when George W. Bush resigned to become President of the United States. Perry was elected to full gubernatorial terms in 2002, 2006 and 2010. With a tenure in office to date of 10 years, 233 days, Perry is the longest continuously serving current U.S. governor, and the second longest serving current U.S. governor (after Terry Branstad of Iowa).

Perry served as Chairman of the Republican Governors Association in 2008 (succeeding Sonny Perdue of Georgia) and again in 2011. Perry is the longest-serving governor in Texas state history. As a result, he is the only governor in modern Texas history to have appointed at least one person to every eligible state office, board, or commission position (as well as to several elected offices to which the governor can appoint someone to fill an unexpired term, such as six of the nine current members of the Texas Supreme Court).

Perry won the 2010 Republican gubernatorial primary election, defeating U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison and former Wharton County Republican Party Chairwoman and businesswoman Debra Medina. In the 2010 Texas gubernatorial election, Perry won a third term by defeating former Houston mayor Bill White and Kathie Glass.

D. B. Cooper

,
D. B. Cooper is the name popularly used to refer to an unidentified man who hijacked a Boeing 727 aircraft in the airspace between Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington, USA on November 24, 1971. He extorted $200,000 in ransom and parachuted to an uncertain fate. Despite an extensive manhunt and an exhaustive (and ongoing) FBI investigation, the perpetrator has never been located or positively identified. To date, the case remains the only unsolved airline hijacking in American aviation history.

The suspect purchased his airline ticket under the alias Dan Cooper, but due to a news media miscommunication he became known in popular lore as "D. B. Cooper." Hundreds of leads have been pursued in the ensuing years but no conclusive evidence has ever surfaced regarding Cooper's true identity or whereabouts, and the bulk of the ransom money has never been recovered. Numerous theories of widely varying plausibility have been proposed by experts, reporters, and amateur enthusiasts.

While FBI investigators have insisted from the beginning that Cooper probably did not survive his risky jump, the agency maintains an active case file which has grown to more than 60 volumes and continues to solicit creative ideas and new leads from the public. "Maybe a hydrologist can use the latest technology to trace the $5,800 in ransom money found in 1980 to where Cooper landed upstream," suggested Special Agent Larry Carr, leader of the investigation team since 2006. "Or maybe someone just remembers that odd uncle.

Forbes Top Colleges

,
forbes top colleges
The best years of life are also among the most expensive. Choose with care.

Our annual ranking of the 650 best undergraduate institutions focuses on the things that matter the most to students: quality of teaching, great career prospects, graduation rates and low levels of debt. Unlike other lists, we pointedly ignore ephemeral measures such as school “reputation” and ill-conceived metrics that reward wasteful spending. We try and evaluate the college purchase as a consumer would:  Is it worth spending as much as a quarter of a million dollars for this degree?  The rankings are prepared exclusively for Forbes by the Center for College Affordability and Productivity, a Washington, D.C. think tank founded by Ohio University economist Richard Vedder.

For the second year in a row, Williams College, a small, western-Massachusetts liberal arts school, has been named as the best undergraduate institution in America. With total annual costs adding up to nearly $55,000, a Williams education is certainly not cheap, but the 2,000 undergraduates here have among the highest four-year graduation rates in the country, win loads of prestigious national awards like Rhodes and Marshall Scholarships, and are often rewarded with high-paying careers.

In second place? Princeton University, which boasts nearly nonexistent student debt rates due to one of the most generous financial aid programs in the nation. Outside of Princeton and Harvard, Ivy League schools fare relatively poorly, suggesting that their reputations might be a bit overblown.

Gabrielle Giffords

,
Gabrielle Dee "Gabby" Giffords (born June 8, 1970) is an American politician. A Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives, she has represented Arizona's 8th congressional district since 2007. She is the third woman in Arizona's history to be elected to the U.S. Congress. Giffords is currently serving her third term in the United States House of Representatives, having been re-elected in the 2010 midterm elections. Considered a "Blue Dog" Democrat, her stances on health care reform and illegal immigration were sources of attention for those opposed to her candidacy and have made her a recipient of criticism from various conservative groups. She has described herself as a "former Republican.

Giffords is a native of Tucson, Arizona, and a graduate of Scripps College and Cornell University. Prior to her election to Congress, Giffords served in the Arizona House of Representatives from 2001 until 2003 and the Arizona State Senate from 2003 until 2005, when she resigned to run for the seat held by then-Congressman Jim Kolbe. She also worked as an associate for regional economic development in New York City and as CEO of El Campo Tire Warehouses, a local automotive chain owned by her grandfather. She is married to astronaut and Space Shuttle Commander Mark E. Kelly.

On January 8, 2011, Giffords was a victim of a shooting near Tucson, which was reported to be an assassination attempt on her,at a supermarket where she was meeting publicly with constituents. She was critically injured by a gunshot wound to the head; thirteen people were injured and six others were killed in the shooting, among them conservative federal judge John Roll. Giffords was later brought to a rehabilitation facility in Houston, Texas, where she recovered some of her ability to walk, speak, read and write. On May 16, 2011, Giffords traveled to Kennedy Space Center to watch the launch of STS-134, the final flight of Space Shuttle Endeavour, which was commanded by her husband Mark Kelly.

Apollo 18

,
Have you heard of this upcoming movie called Apollo 18 from The Weinstein Co. and director Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego? It's a mockumentary feature produced by Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) that will be shot in the Paranormal Activity/The Last Exorcism found-footage style, purporting to depict lost recordings from Apollo 18's mysterious mission to our lunar friend where, suffice to say, something very, very bad happened to the crew.

My assumption is it's going to be sold to audiences much like The Fourth Kind was, as if it is 100% real as it does revolve around a very real conspiracy theory, which appears to revolve around the final Apollo mission, the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project, a joint U.S. and Russian space effort. The movie appears to be referring to it as Apollo 18 and is suggesting cancelled Apollo missions 19 and 20 actually took place.

Additionally, the film promises to use archival footage from the missions that have been online for some time including the following video, said to be footage of Apollo 20 capturing video footage of an alien spaceship on the moon prior to its landing. The craft first appears in the video below around the 3:12 mark.

Virginia Tech

,
The Virginia Tech massacre was a school shooting that took place on April 16, 2007, on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia, United States. In two separate attacks, approximately two hours apart, the perpetrator, Seung-Hui Cho, killed 32 people and wounded 25 others before committing suicide. The massacre is the deadliest shooting incident by a single gunman in U.S. history.

Cho, a senior English major at Virginia Tech, had previously been diagnosed with a severe anxiety disorder. During much of his middle school and high school years, he received therapy and special education support. After graduating from high school, Cho enrolled at Virginia Tech. Due to federal privacy laws, Virginia Tech was not informed of Cho's previous diagnosis or the accommodations he had been granted at school. In 2005, Cho was accused of stalking two female students. After an investigation, a Virginia special justice declared Cho mentally ill and ordered him to attend treatment. Lucinda Roy, a professor and former chairwoman of the English department, had also asked Cho to seek counseling. Cho's mother also turned to the church.

The attacks received international media coverage and drew widespread criticism of U.S. laws and culture. It sparked intense debate about gun violence, gun laws, gaps in the U.S. system for treating mental health issues, the perpetrator's state of mind, the responsibility of college administrations, privacy laws, journalism ethics, and other issues. Television news organizations that aired portions of the killer's multimedia manifesto were criticized by victims' families, Virginia law enforcement officials, and the American Psychiatric Association.

The massacre prompted the state of Virginia to close legal loopholes that had previously allowed Cho, an individual adjudicated as mentally unsound, to purchase handguns without detection by the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). It also led to passage of the first major federal gun control measure in more than 13 years. The law strengthening the NICS was signed by President George W. Bush on January 5, 2008.

The Virginia Tech Review Panel, a state-appointed body assigned to review the incident, criticized Virginia Tech administrators for failing to take action that might have reduced the number of casualties. The panel's report also reviewed gun laws and pointed out gaps in mental health care as well as privacy laws that left Cho's deteriorating condition in college untreated.

Fourth Of July

,
Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, political speeches and ceremonies, and various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the national day of the United States.

During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia. After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the Declaration, finally approving it on July 4.

John of God

,
John of God (Spanish: San Juan de Dios; Portuguese: São João de Deus) (March 8, 1495 – March 8, 1550) was a Portuguese-born friar and saint, one of Spain's leading religious figures.

John of God was born João Cidade in Montemor-o-Novo, Portugal, into a once-prominent family that was impoverished but had great religious faith. His mother died when he was only a small child, and his father joined a monastic order.

As a young man, John worked as a shepherd for a farmer who was very pleased with his strength and diligent work. John had an offer to marry the farmer's daughter and become heir to the property; he refused because he wanted to pursue a spiritual life in the service of God.

He moved to Spain, where he served as a soldier under Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and fought a few battles. After many heroic exploits, he worked disseminating religious books, using the recent moveable type printing press of Johannes Gutenberg to provide people with the Bible.

He experienced a major religious conversion on Sebastian's day (January 20), while listening to a sermon by Saint John of Avila, who was later to become his spiritual mentor and would encourage him in his quest to improve the life of the poor. He then went temporarily into what appeared to be a state of madness and was subsequently thrown into an insane asylum, where he recovered after a visit from John of Ávila and realized that the poor and needy deserved better treatment than he had received. He decided to devote the rest of his life to caring for the sick and the poor.

Settling in Granada, he expended all his energy in caring for the neediest people of the city. Slowly he drew to himself a dedicated circle of disciples who felt called to join him in this service. John organized his followers into the Order of Hospitallers, now better known as the Brothers Hospitallers of St. John of God, who care for the sick in countries around the world. One mark of honour to his labours is that this order has been officially entrusted with the medical and dental care of the pope.

He died on March 8, 1550, his 55th birthday. He was canonized by Pope Alexander VIII on October 16, 1690, and later named the patron saint of hospitals, the sick, nurses, firefighters, alcoholics, and booksellers. John's feast day is commemorated on March 8. A memorial Church, which took his name, was constructed in 1757 in Granada to lodge its Grave, protected by the Knights of Saint John of God.

Southwest Airlines Pilot

,
A potty-mouthed Southwest Airlines pilot was suspended after inadvertently broadcasting an obscenity-laced tirade bashing flight attendants across Texas airspace.

In the raunchy rant, the unidentified pilot unleashed a slew of expletives as he ripped into his co-workers' sexuality, age and size.

HEAR THE AUDIO: Pilot's foul-mouthed rant about stewardesses

"There's 12 flight attendants...Eleven (expletive) over the top (expletive), (expletive) homosexuals and a granny," the pilot said, clearly unaware his cockpit microphone became stuck open.

"Eleven. I mean, think of the odds of that. I thought I was in Chicago, which was party-land.

"After that, it was just a continuous stream of gays and grannies and grands."

Seconds later, the pilot offered his unsavory views of Houston flight attendants.

"Now I'm back in Houston, which is easily one of the ugliest bases," the pilot told his co-pilot in the recording obtained by Houston TV station KPRC. "I mean it's all these (expletive) old dudes and grannies and there's like maybe a handful of cute chicks."

The diatribe, broadcast over the Houston air traffic control radio frequency on March 25, blocked communication between air traffic controllers and other pilots for more than two minutes, ABC News reported.

At one point, the air traffic controller in Houston tried to interrupt the onslaught.

"OK, whoever is, uh, transmitting, better watch what you're saying," the controller said.

Air traffic controllers sent the tape to the Federal Aviation Administration the same day, ABC News reported.

"The incident occurred during a phase of flight in which personal conversations are permitted in the cockpit. Nevertheless, the FAA expects a higher level of professionalism from flight crews, regardless of the circumstances," the FAA said in a statement.

The pilot was suspended without pay.

In a video statement released Wednesday, Southwest Airlines Vice President of Flight Operations Chuck Magill said the pilot has apologized to FAA controllers.

"What he said is offensive and inconsistent with the professional behavior and overall respect we require from all employees," Magill said. "He knows what he did cannot happen again."

Fiesta de San Juan

,
Night of Saint John (the Baptist) is a very old holiday that is often associated with fire or fire. Some associated with this event with a celebration in which they celebrate the arrival of the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere, the main thing is the ritual fire. The purpose of this rule is "to give strength to the sun," which since then, become "weak", the days are getting shorter until the winter solstice. Symbolic fire also has the function of "cleansing" the people who see them. The festival is celebrated in many parts of Europe, but particularly strong in Spain, Portugal (São João Fogueiras), Norway (Jonsok), Denmark (Sankthans), Sweden (Midsommar), Finland (Juhannus) and England (Midsummer). In South America, Brazil has Festas Junin, Paraguay, Bolivia, Chile, Peru and Venezuela the night of San Juan. La noche de San Juan, too, is associated with ancient traditions and legends of Spanish as a Legend Enchanted.
In many places there is no doubt that the celebration today has a direct connection to ancient celebrations associated with the summer solstice, is influenced by pre-Christian rite or just related to natural cycles. However, elsewhere (eg Spain and Portugal) the relationship between the celebration of summer solstice (northern hemisphere) which took place June 20 to 21 and the celebration of Midsummer's Day (which is June 24) vary depending on date, discontinuities in the tradition celebrations, and customs, etc.. However, there are common elements such as making a bonfire in the streets and plazas in cities where family and friends gathered.

Whitey Bulger

,
James Joseph "Whitey" Bulger, Jr. (born September 3, 1929) is alleged to be a former crime boss who led the Winter Hill Gang based in Somerville, Massachusetts, in the United States. He also served as a top echelon informant for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in a controversial arrangement that allowed him to continue his criminal activities. The disclosure by The Boston Globe and in various court cases of the corruption and illegal activities of federal agents involved with Bulger was a major embarrassment for the agency.

After being tipped off to a pending indictment, Bulger fled the Boston area and went into hiding in December of 1994. Bulger was listed as a fugitive on the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. He was wanted for racketeering (under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO)), 19 counts of murder, extortion, money laundering, conspiracy and narcotics distribution.

On June 22, 2011, he was arrested at the apartment he had lived in for fifteen years in Santa Monica, California, along with his girlfriend Catherine Greig. He was 81 years old at the time of his arrest, and supposedly in poor health.

Subsequently, Bulger and Greig were extradited back to Massachusetts. They were brought under heavy guard to the waterfront federal courthouse in Boston, necessitating the closing of part of Boston Harbor. Greig was arraigned in the federal District Court of the First Circuit in Boston on charges of harboring a fugitive and is currently seeking release on bail. Bulger has not sought bail. He remains in custody at the Plymouth County House of Correction in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Asteroid

,
Asteroids, once called a minor planet or planetoid, is sized objects smaller than planets but larger than meteoroids, commonly found in the inner Solar System (deeper than the orbit of Neptune). Different comets asteroids from visual sightings. Comet's coma appeared ("tail") while asteroids do not.
The first discovered asteroid Ceres was first discovered in 1801 by Giuseppe Piazzi. At that time, the asteroid known as a planetoid.
Already as many as hundreds of thousands of asteroids in our solar system and now found a new discovery that an average of 5000 pieces per month. On August 27, 2006, from a total of 339,376 registered minor planets, of whom 136,563 have orbits sufficiently well known so that it can be given permanent official numbers. Among the planets, 13,350 have official names (trivia: about 650 of these names requires identification). But the lowest number of unnamed minor planet is (3360) 1981 VA; minor planet named after the top number (except the dwarf planet Eris and 134 340 136 199 Pluto), namely 129 342 Ependes.
Now it is estimated that asteroids with a diameter of more than 1 km in the solar system solar totaling between 1.1 to 1.9 million. Largest asteroids in the inner solar system, that is 1 Ceres with a diameter of 900-1000 km. Two asteroid belts inner solar system, which is 2 Pallas and 4 Vesta; both have a diameter of ~ 500 km. Vesta is an asteroid belt main thing is sometimes visible to the naked eye (in some fairly rare occurrence, which is close to the Earth asteroids can be seen without technical assistance; see Apophis 99 942).
The mass of the asteroid Main Belt is estimated to about 3.0-3.6 × 1021 kg [4] [5], or approximately 4% of the mass of the moon. From all this, 1 Ceres 0.95 × 1021 kg mass, 32% of the total. Then the densest asteroid, 4 Vesta (9%), 2 Pallas (7%) and 10 Hygiea (3%), making this estimate to 51%; three onwards, 511 Davida (1.2%), 704 Interamnia (1.0%) and 3 Juno (0.9%), only add 3% of its total mass. The number next asteroid is increasing exponentially, although the mass of each drop. It is said that the asteroid Ida has a satellite named Dactyl.

facial beauty analysis

,
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder–and the computer–according to new facial beauty analysis software that makes it possible for people to automatically calculate their looks. The facial beauty analysis application, dubbed Anaface, evaluates the beauty of a human face and automatically scores its appearance.

Anaface, which stands for “analyze face,” allows users to upload a facial photo and receive a specific numeric ranking of their beauty. “Anaface computes a facial beauty score based on the geometry of a person’s face, and it is based on substantial scientific research and statistical analysis,” said Bryan Cooley, CEO of Atama Group LLC, which created the application.

via New Anaface Facial Beauty Analysis Software Calculates Looks Instantly.

It’s super easy. You click the Terms & Condition button, upload a photo, place facial points as directed, and it spits out your score.

I scored a 8.12 out of 10. “Compared to my eye width, my innerocular distance is nearly ideal.” But my nose is too wide, my face is too narrow, and my mouth is too wide for my nose. I’m comforted by the fact that Angelina Jolie scored just an 8.4 and was also faulted for her nose-mouth ratio.

If you do this and score low, check out this New York Times article on why symmetry is not the be all, end all on determining beauty. If you do this and score high and you’re a guy, e-mail me.

But if you do this, what are you giving up? In your hurry to find out how good-looking you are, you probably skipped a close reading of those terms & conditions.
